Words of the Day

It's time for WORDS OF THE DAY!!!

And today's words are:
opponent
opportunity
oppose
opposite

Let's begin!

Opponent (n) = a person who is against another person in a fight, game or argument.

e.g. His opponent in tonight's boxing match will be difficult to beat!
Her opponent won the game 5-2.
Our opponents in the school debate were very well prepared.

Opportunity (n) = a favorable set of circumstances or time to do something.

e.g. We may never get an opportunity like this again!
Let's create an opportunity for more people to join in and make a difference.
He had so many opportunities but threw them all away.

Oppose (v) = to express strong disapproval or disagreement.

e.g. We opposed the proposal to build a new shopping mall in the city.
She opposed the plan to expand the business because of expenses.

Opposite (adj) = having a position on the other side of something/someone (1), when you face the speaker or a specific thing (2), something entirely different; contrary (3)

e.g. Mom and Dad sat at opposite ends of the table at dinner. (1)
I asked the man opposite me if he could open the window. (2)
I would give you a ride home, but we live in opposite directions! (3)

Also, when we first start learning adjectives, we often use opposites like good-bad, tall-short, big-small, etc. It's handy to know opposites especially when you need to rephrase something! For example, instead of saying "This is bad!" you could say "This isn't very good!"

Have a great day everyone! 😁😁
