Words of the day!!

It's time again for... WORDS OF THE DAY!!!

Here we go...

1. gather
2. gauge
3. gaunt
4. gawk

1. gather (v) = 1. come or bring together, 2. collect from a wide area / pick or cut and collect for storage (fruit / vegetables, information), 3. understand something / conclude 4. fold / bunch something (a garment, clothing) up

examples: 1. A crowd soon gathered around the musician on the street.
2. Let's gather some flowers and berries for the table.
3. I gathered you wanted to see me after what happened.
4. She gathered the shawl around her shoulders.

2. gauge (n) = 1. standard measure especially of width or thickness, 2. instrument for measuring the amount or level of something, 3. distance between the rails on a railway

examples: 1. What gauge of wire should we use for this project?
2. Don't forget to check the fuel gauge before we leave.
3. This track uses a standard gauge, so our job won't have any problems.

gauge (v) = 1. measure something accurately, 2. make a judgement about something.

examples: 1. I can't seem to gauge the strength of the wind.
2. It was difficult to gauge how people would respond to the company's statement.



3. gaunt (adj) = 1. (of a person) made exceptionally thin by hunger or illness, 2. (of a place) bare / desolate

examples: 1. The gaunt face of a starving man can make anyone feel upset.
2. The photo showed the gaunt landscape of the moon.

4. gawk (v) = stare impolitely or stupidly at someone or something

example: They gawked at the movie star as he walked down the red carpet.
